James A Syce obtained B Pharm (Pharmacy) and M Pharm (in Pharmacology) degrees from the University of the Western Cape in 1973 and 1978 and a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Kentucky University, USA in 1983. He is registered as pharmacist with the South African Pharmacy Council since 1975, was a on Fulbright Scholarship in the USA from 1978 to 1981, but has been on the UWC School of Pharmacy academic staff since 1975. He has been Head of the Department of Pharmacology (1981 – 1997), Deputy Dean of Science Faculty (2000-2004) and Senior Associate Director in the South African Herbal Science and Medicine Institute (SAHSMI Jun 2006 to 2011) but his present position (since 1998) is that of Senior Professor of Pharmacology in the School of Pharmacy.
His present research activities are focussed on Traditional Plant Medicines with main current research project/s on: Clinical Trials of Traditional Phytomedicines, Biopharmaceutics of Herbal products, Pharmaceutical Evaluation and regulatory control of Herbal Medicines. Previous experience in NCCAM funded TICIPS Projects: The International Center for Indigenous Phytotherapy Studies: HIV/AIDS, Secondary Infections and Immune Modulation (2004-2010); research on pro-drugs for targeted delivery of drugs to the lung; rhinovirus-induced acerbations of asthma and asthma plant medicines.
