Biography

Gutierrez is an Assistant Professor in the UTMB School of Health Professional Department of Nutrition and Metabolism and has several years of graduate-level teaching experience in both nutrition science and exercise physiology. She is the program director for the combined Master of Science and Dietetics Internship program at UTMB. Dr. Gutierrez completed a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences Cornell University, M.S. in Nutrition Science and dietetic internship at S.U.N.Y. Buffalo, and a Ph.D. in Exercise, Nutrition, and Health at Baylor University.

Dr. Gutierrez' research goal is to determine how nutrition and activity can be personalized to reduce development of type 2 diabetes in people with high genetic risk for the disease. She recently received research funding from the UTMB Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center to determine if knowledge of genetic variants predicting type 2 diabetes also predict hyperglycemia in bedridden older adults.

In 2013, Dr. Gutierrez was awarded the 'Emerging Dietetic Leader' by the Washington, DC affiliate of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She has also served as a nutritionist for varsity teams at Baylor University, Faculty in Residence at the George Washington University, healthy cooking instructor at Martins Cooking School (Amherst, NY), and the nutrition blogger for the FitnessRx magazine website. In her spare time, Dr. Gutierrez loves to cook, make jewelry, and lift weights
