Biography

Dr Nicholas has lead the Mycoplasma Group in the Department of Statutory and Exotic Bacterial Diseases at the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) at Weybridge, UK for over 20 years. This is an OIE Reference Centre for small ruminant mycoplasmas. Dr Nicholas has been a member of the Mycoplasma Expert Group for the European Pharmocopoeia since 2000 and was appointed mycoplasma advisor to the EU expert on the VICH Expert Working Group on Biologicals in 2006. He is currently leading an EU EMIDA project on bovine mycoplasmosis with 3 other European countries (2011-2014).

As the major mycoplasma diseases, such contagious bovine and caprine pleuropneumonia and contagious agalactia, are exotic to the UK, Dr Nicholas travels widely particularly to the Mediterranean region, including Turkey and Italy. He has also undertaken technical missions in ruminant mycoplasmas for governments and international bodies to sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

He is a visiting research fellow at Kings College London and Liverpool University and visiting lecturer in mycoplasmology at the Royal Veterinary College, London and Surrey University. He was awarded a visiting Professorship in Life Sciences by Kingston University in 2010.
