Translation Research in Pharmacogenomics

The ability to more accurately model drug toxicity responses present across human populations than genetically defined mouse populations afford. Identification of inbred mouse strains that exhibit the adverse drug response of interest provides reproducible animal models for investigation of underlying molecular mechanisms and to screen next in class candidates.

Phenotypic findings in combination with pharmacogenomics can be used to identify variation in specific genes and pathways associated with susceptibility, further informing mechanisms. Importantly, risk factors identified in this way generate hypotheses that can be tested in DNA obtained from patients who have experienced the toxicity.
