Biography
Martin Hauer-Jensen is a recipient of the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. He is an F.A.C.S. and serves as a Professor of pharmaceutical sciences, surgery, and pathology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, Ark, USA and Staff Surgeon at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, Little Rock, Ark, USA. He also occupies the positions of Associate Dean for Research in the UAMS College of Pharmacy and Director of the Division of Radiation Health. Dr. Hauer-Jensen’s research emphasis is on radiation effects on normal tissues, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. His focus is on determining the mechanisms of and developing prevention strategies for short- and long-term adverse effects of radiation therapy in cancer survivors, as well as on developing effective, nontoxic medical countermeasures against radiological or nuclear threats. Dr. Hauer-Jensen has published more than 150 scientific articles and book chapters, mostly on gastrointestinal radiation biology. His research currently receives funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). He serves on several national and international advisory boards and review panels and is a Former Chair of the Radiation Study Section of the NIH.
