Shankar obtained a masters and doctoral degree in medical microbiology from PG IBMS, University of Madras. He joined Prof Suniti Solomon at YRG CARE to work on HIV/TB immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome. Later, he joined the Division of Molecular Virology, Department of Clinical & Experimental Medicine, Linkoping University, Sweden as a postdoctoral fellow under Prof Marie Larsson to work on the immunoregulatory attributes of HIV-1 on dendritic cells & T cells. Shankar is interested in exploring the immunopathogenesis attributes, especially the immune evasion strategies of persistently infecting viruses and bacteria leading to chronic infections. Shankar serves as Academic Editor of Medicine, PLoS ONE, Associate Editor of BMC Immunology, Microbiology Discovery, and Frontiers in Biosciences.
