Research Interest
Major research interest is to study the mechanisms and the factors (genetic and environmental) that contribute to interindividual variability in drug response. The focus of my current research is to understand the function of CYP450 enzymes and to determine the therapeutic and toxic consequences brought about by variable/altered CYP450-mediated human drug metabolism. I am particularly interested in understanding the link between drug metabolism and cardiac toxicity and therapeutic efficacy of gastroprokinetic drugs; in developing and applying appropriate in vitro as well as in vivo substrate and inhibitor probes to study the role of CYP2B6 in human drug metabolism; and in modulation of enzymatic activity/expression by genetic and environmental agents including drugs. Enzymology and molecular biology tools as well as clinical studies are used to understand the molecular basis of interindividual variability in CYP450 expression and their role in drug metabolism and the resulting clinical consequences.
