Biography

Dr. Wai-Ching Lam is the Professor, Residency Program Director and the Continuing Medical Education Director at the Department of Ophthalmology in the University of Toronto. He is also the Retina Fellowship Director for the University Health Network/Sunnybrook Health Science Center. He is the lead program director and chief examiner of ophthalmology for the Center for the Evaluation of Health Professionals Educated Abroad for Ontario.

He won numerous teaching awards from both the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Ophthalmology. He was the inaugural recipient, of the 2007 Chair Award of the University of Toronto, Department of Ophthalmology in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the department. He was the 4-time winner of the JS Crawford Award for his outstanding contribution to the residency teaching.

He received the Excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education Award Teaching Performance/Mentorship/Advocacy, from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto in 2006. In 2005, he received the Millennium Award (Resident Mentor Award). He was also received the Clinical Teaching Award from Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario.

His main clinical interests are in adult and pediatric vitreoretinal diseases, both medical and surgical. His research area includes that of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, particular diabetic macular edema, retinal vascular disease, retinopathy of prematurity, persistent fetal vasculature and hypobaric chamber study of patients with intraocular gas bubbles. In addition, he also published in the field of medical education, and recently the use surgical simulator in training and assessment.
