Rama Paolo is the Director of Ophthalmology Unit at San Raffaele Scientific Institute and Teaching Hospital, Milan, Italy. His main fields of competence are corneal and ocular surface diseases, and infectious pathologies. From 1988 up to 1993 he was the assistant at the Ophthalmology Unit of Mestre Hospital; from 1993 to 2000 he was the Chief of Cornea and Ocular Surface Diseases Service, and of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at Venice Hospital.In September 2000 he moved to the San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan: From 2000 to November 2005 he was the Chief of the Cornea and Ocular Surface Diseases Service; from November 1, 2005 to 2009 he was the Director of the Department of Ophthalmology. In November 2009, the Ophthalmology Department was divided into two Units. He was nominated Director of the Cornea and Ocular Surface Unit.He was the first person to use NGF eye-drop treatment in patients affected by neurotrophic corneal ulcers (The New England Journal of Medicine, 1998).He was also one of the first surgeons to transplant cultured corneal limbal epithelial stem cells: preliminary results published in Transplantation (2001), and long-term results were published in The New England Journal of Medicine (2010).
