Biography
Dr. Abumere Akinwale, Hattiesburg retina surgeon, is a board certified, fellowship-trained Ophthalmologist. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mississippi College prior to attending the University of Mississippi Medical School. She was a recipient of the merit based Fred McDonnell, M.D., Scholarship which provides full tuition and board for the duration of medical school. She also had the distinction of being elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
Dr. Akinwale completed an Internal Medicine internship at Harvard Medical School and her Ophthalmology Residency at Boston University. She subsequently completed a vitreo-retinal fellowship at Harvard Medical School with an emphasis on diabetic eye diseases and an additional surgical retina fellowship at Southern Eye center under the preceptorship of Dr.Jaime Jiménez. Dr. Akinwale is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
