Dr. Stephan Gebel received his PhD in Molecular Biology at the Institute for Genetics and Toxicology at the Nuclear Research Center Karlsruhe, Germany, for his work on modifications of transcription factors c-Jun and c-Fos. In 1992, he moved to the Philip Morris Research Laboratories in Cologne, Germany, which was an affiliate of Philip Morris International (PMI) R&D, Switzerland. In 2003, he became manager of the Molecular Biology Lab. His research efforts were focused on the characterization of molecular mechanisms involved in the initiation and progression of cigarette smoke related diseases using suitable in vivo and in vitro models. His work contributed to the elucidation of distinct cellular stress responses that are related to xenobiotics and oxidative stress.Later, in 2010 Dr. Gebel was appointed to head of the Biological Network Science group in PMI R&D. The main objective of this group was to develop and validate lung disease-related biological networks in collaboration with Selventa Inc. Cambridge, MA, USA.
