Biography
Dr. Shigeki Takemoto was born on August 30, 1960, in Japan. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Kumamoto with a Medical Doctorate degree, and in 1996, he received his Doctorate in Medical Science degree. He is now a leader of international cooperation with developing countries and a researcher of special diseases caused by one of human retroviruses, HTLV-1. Dr. Takemoto began his international carrier with Dr. Kiyoshi Takatsuki who discovered adult T-cell leukemia caused by HTLV-1. Then he worked as a Visiting Fellow at Dr. Genoveffa Franchini’s laboratory, which became independent after Dr. Robert Gallo moving to the Institute of Human Virology, in the National Cancer Institute of National Institutes of Health, U.S.A., holding this position from 1996 to 1999. For the next five and half years, he served as a Clinical Assistant and Instructor of Hematology at the University of Kochi Medical School, in which Dr. Isao Miyoshi was working who discovered HTLV-1 in Japan. He has continued to progress in his carrier at Internal Medicine at National Hospital Organization Kumamoto Medical Center from 2008 to now. He has been a good supporter and organizer of the training courses of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). In addition, he has been an Associate Professor, Department of International Medical Cooperation, Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Kumamoto University since 2011. Notably, through his work he established that proteins in the tumor cells and in the serum of patients play important roles in development of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. As a recognized professional in his field, Dr. Takemoto has published more than 50 papers and received various honors, including a Kumamoto City Municipal Centennial Commemorative Project in 1995, Young Investigator’s Award of the Japanese Society of Hematology in 1996, and Medical Encouragement Award of the Kumamoto Medical Society in 2012.
