Biography
Matthias Clauss was born and raised close to Munich, Germany. He completed his undergraduate and master training in chemistry at the University in Ulm, Germany. After having received his PhD from the University of Heidelberg in cancer research, he completed his postdoctoral research at the Columbia University in New York. After intermittent activities at Max-Planck-Institutes in Germany, he joined the Indiana University School Medicine as faculty.
Research Interest

Matthias Clauss studies the balance of angiogenesis in repair with focus on the pro-angiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the anti-angiogenic endothelial monocyte-activating polypeptide II (EMAP II), their receptors and cell signaling. He also studies the role of adult stem cells in tissue repair and how inflammation can cause cellular senescence of these cells. Furthermore, Dr. Clauss and his team analyze mechanisms leading to cardiovascular complications in the HIV positive population with focus on the intracellular HIV-Nef protein.
