She received her MS degree in Microbiology from Taras Shevchenko Kiev State University (Ukraine) and Ph.D. and D.Sc. Degrees in Microbiology from Institute of Microbiology and Virology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. She served as a Vice-president of the National Control Authority for Biological Products of Ukraine for many years. She has received a solid background in regulation of biological products during the training courses in the Bureau of Biologics (Canada) and Massachusetts Biologic Laboratories (USA). Dr. Sorokulova is the author of 87 refereed scientific publications, and 23 patents. She created several biotechnological products; some of them are commercially available.
Development of new microbial approaches for detection and control of pathogens. Therapeutic (probiotic) bacteria may provide a valuable alternative in the treatment of infections caused by pathogens. Probiotic bacteria can regulate disturbed gut microflora, enhance intestinal barrier function, modulate signal transduction pathways and gene expression in epithelial and immune cells. Probiotic bacteria may improve both innate and adaptive immune responses. Our research interests are centered on Bacillus probiotic bacteria and their role in the prevention of stress-related complications and treatment of infections due to multiresistant pathogens. We are also developing new approaches for detection of pathogens using bacteriophages.
