Two episodes of retrograde jejunogastric and jejunojejunal intussusceptions as a complication of a long term indwelling gastrostomy tube in a child: A case report

Abstract :

Gastrostomy tubes are frequently used to provide enteral access in children. Severe long-term complications are rare. The case reported here is a 12-year-old neurologically impaired child who had gastrostomy done for pharyngeal incoordination, presented eight years later with intestinal obstruction and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Radiologic imaging showed a retrograde jejunogastric intussusception around the gastrostomy tube. Six days after exploratory laparotomy and manual reduction of retrograde jejunogastric intussusception, A perforated jejunojejunal intussusception was occurred. Closure of jejunal stump and gastrojejunostomy was performed. Subsequent leakage, bleeding and perforation of jejunal stump were proceeded later. This report aimed to raising awareness about this uncommon but potentially lethal complication with a discussion on diagnosis and management. The appearance on radiologic imaging is necessary to facilitate early treatment and correction.
