Abstract :

The cerebral sinovenous thrombosis in the pediatric population is uncommon yet underappreciated and potentially life threatening neurological condition or death. The incidence is 0.6/100,000 per year touching 30-50% newborn babies. This is a case study (dating 20 years ago) of a family where the mother had primary pregnancy (as still birth, full term) and lost the second pregnancy (full term) too, following few minutes of resuscitation. Both were female newborns and were normal. No apparent congenital malformation. Investigations carried out and at that time, showed normal result (both maternal and infants). Autopsy of the second baby showed no abnormality apart from massive brain haemorrhage. Otherwise, the family history showed father to be a carrier of Factor V Leiden deficiency (this Factor is first discovered in 1994-1996). Recently (2-3 years), there were few publications came up with a 100% similar cases, discovering the same deficiency in Factor V Leiden in the fetus, causing severe cerebral sinovenous thrombosis followed by remarkable brain haemorrhage and death. Still the mystery of this event occurrence only in full term babies, leading to a sudden perinatal death is unexplainable. The preterm babies till 37 weeks, though they are carrier, could be born safe and healthy as it happens with our case study where the mother gave birth later on to two healthy girls born at 37 weeks respectively. Perinatal death is a tragedy for those suffering from the sorrow of it, it is important to complete a full family evaluation to find the causes and offer information about the risk of recurrence.
