Swift heavy ion induced modification of polymers studied by mass spectrometry

Abstract :

Swift heavy ion induced modification of aliphatic polymers (PVAc, PVA and PVF) were carried out using ion beam of xenon (Xe), gold (Au), and uranium (U) with kinetic energies up to 2 GeV and fluences up to 1x1012 ions/cm2 at room temperature. The induced chemical modifications were monitored by in-situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and quadrupole mass spectrometry (MS). Apart from a general reduction of the IR absorption bands, the appearance of new absorption bands (ketone and CO2 group) was observed. Volatile molecular fragments of various species from H2 up to CO2 lead to a considerable mass loss of the polymer. Correlation of structural analysis of the damaged polymer and mass analysis of its volatile fragments gives plausible reaction mechanisms for the ion induced degradation. Such knowledge contributes to a better understanding of radiolysis degradation mechanism in polymers used for applications such as particle accelerators and space vehicles.

Biography :

Umme Habiba Hossain has completed her PhD in Material Science from Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. Currently, she is a Post-doctoral Fellow of the Australian National University. Her research field is in Radiation Damage of Materials. During her PhD she has worked on the investigation of structural changes of polymers using mass spectrometer. She has published more than 9 papers during her PhD work in reputed journals.
