GARY JAMES

Biography

Dr. James is Director of the Biomedical Anthropology Program, Director of the Institute for Primary and Preventative Health Care and Professor of Anthropology, Nursing and Bioengineering at Binghamton University. He is a human population biologist who earned his Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology (Human Biology Program) from the Pennsylvania State University and had post-doctoral training in hypertension and cardiovascular endocrinology at the Weil College of Medicine of Cornell University. He is author or co-author of over 300 peer-reviewed publications examining physiological and endocrine adaptations to the dynamic stresses of everyday life, the relation of these responses to the development of chronic diseases, the cardiovascular health effects of modernization, women's health, the functioning of the renin-angiotensin system and ambulatory blood pressure technology. He is an elected fellow of the AAAS, and the Society of Behavioral Medicine and an elected member of the Harvey Society. He is a past-president of the Human Biology Association and American Dermatoglyphics Association and serves on several editorial boards including Blood Pressure Monitoring, Current Hypertension Reviews, the American Journal of Human Biology, the Open Biochemistry Journal, and Public Health Frontiers. He and his colleagues have received numerous grant awards from the National Institutes of Health over the past 20 years, and he is currently co-PI with Gerri Britton from the Decker School of Nursing of a funded study of smoking cessation in pregnancy. He has conducted field work in Western Samoa and the United States. Feature articles about his studies of ambulatory blood pressure and stress in working women have appeared in the NY Times Sunday Magazine and Mademoiselle.
