In the USA, the prevalence of migraine and severe headache is significant, affecting 1 in 6 American and 1 in 5 women over a 3-month span. A recent meta-analysis by Burch et al., 2018 found that the overall prevalence rate was 15.3% [95% CI[14.75-15.85]], 9.7% male prevalence rate [95% CI[9.05-10.35]] and 20.7% female prevalence rate [95% CI[19.84-21.56]]. Patients with migraine can experience other visual symptoms, including migraine with aura, atypical auras, "visual blurring", "retinal migraine", "ophthalmoplegic migraine", photophobia, palinopsia, and "visual snow". Hemiplegic migraine is a rare genetic disorder that is classified as familial or sporadic that is accompanied with body weakness on one side. The weakness is often associated with at least one other aura symptom. Vision is temporarily affected, and symptoms include photopsia, and bright, shimmering, jagged lines. This course reviews common headaches disorder that may be followed by visual symptoms.
