Abstract :

India and China have been projected as the favorite destinations for Ophthalmology clinical trials. In future, up to 65% of food and drug administration (FDA)-regulated trials are expected to be outsourced from the US to these two destinations. Over the past two decades, India has made tremendous strides in eye care. A political will, strong leadership, government support and the strength of a robust nonprofit sector has led to a series of key policy decisions in Eye health and innovations in the country. India is today ready to contribute its potential in Eye care to the world in a big way. This paper attempts to identify, address and compare the current capabilities in Indian Eye care system with rest of the World/US, in terms of facilities, research pool, subject pool, knowledge, equipment, technology, funding, administration, among other areas in Eye research. It is an attempt to show case India as a destination for Eye research/Real world Drug and Device Clinical trials in Ophthalmology.
