The aim of the presentation is to describe the function of the MMHUs, the network they have established in Greece and the model of the psychiatric care they provide in two different geographical areas (1. North East Greece 2. Central Greece). Historical information about the way the MMHUs were inspired and developed, their current human resources, the way their multidisciplinary teams are built and the extend of the population they serve are presented. Finally, it provides insight into the goals achieved through the principles of Social Psychiatry and the obstacles they have to overcome due to cultural, lingual and mentality diversities of the population.
Dr Ioannis Bellas earned his medical degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and completed his residency training at Department of Psychiatry of the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis. The last three years he is a psychiatrist for the Society of Social Psychiatry P. Sakellaropoulos in North Eastern Greece.
