Superior oblique expander for correction of residual hypotropia in thyroid ophthalmopathy

Abstract :

To study the effect of superior oblique expander on vertical deviation in case of thyroid Ophthalmopathy. Method: Forty five year old man. Known to have thyroid dysfunction. Patient underwent left inferior rectus recession 8.0 mm from original insertion. That was to correct large angle left eye hypotropia as per history taken from the patient. Orthoptic evaluation revealed that he had left hypotropia 30 prism diopter in primary position. It increased up to 45 on right gaze. It decreased to 20 on left gaze. He had A-pattern exotropia. We did left superior oblique expander 9.0 mm in addition to lateral rectus recession 9.0 mm. Early post-operative findings were absence of vertical deviation in primary position and improvement of A-pattern. Conclusion: Superior oblique expander can correct vertical deviation in case of thyroid Ophthalmopathy.

Biography :

Moustafa S Abdelhafez has completed Ph.D. of 24 years from Tanta school of medicine, Egypt. After completing Master Degree, he joined Magrabi Eye Hospitals Group. Within two years, he has passed all exams of fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, U.K. Pediatric ophthalmology fellowship had started in Magrabi for 2 years followed by observational fellowship for few months in Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, USA. He has achieved more than 10,000 pediatric eye and all strabismus surgical procedures. He has presented more than 70 talks all over the world. Now, he is chief of Magrabi pediatric ophthalmology & strabismus group.
