Abstract :

Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the rate of particular medicamentous therapy utilization in patients hospitalized for ischemic heart disease at County Hospital, and to compare therapy received on admission to and at discharge from the hospital. Method: Data on all patients hospitalized for coronary heart disease at CountyHospital during a5-year period were analyzed according to age, sex and diagnosis. Patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome were hospitalized at Coronary Unit, and those with angina pectoris at Department of Cardiology. Data on patient treatment were collected from patient history taken on admission and medical records at discharge (letter of discharge). Results: Results are graphically presented. Analysis of 5-year records revealed nitrates and ACE inhibitors to be the most common therapy reported on admission, whereas aspirin, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers were most commonly taken at discharge. A significantly higher rate of using statins was recorded at discharge than on admission, resulting from intensified education of physicians in the prevention and management of coronary heart disease. Conclusion: Continuing education of both patients and physicians in secondary prevention of coronary heart disease is required for a more appropriate approach to this group of patients. Future studies should address the issues of early prevention and early detection of ischemic heart disease. The present study performed at a county hospital assessed the measures of secondary prevention and compared them with current guidelines, thus contributing to further upgrading the management and prevention of ischemic heart disease.
