Abstract :

The most common cause of blindness in the aging population is macular degeneration AMD. Currently the only management of dry AMD is dietary as a preventive measure i.e. AREDS formulation as suggested by the NIH. However using light in the infra red range, Lower Level Light Therapy (LLLT) has been shown to be effective in numerous therapeutic areas especially the eye. It has been well established that using light in the infra-red range has the effect of rehabilitating mitochondria of neural cells resulting in visual improvement in dry AMD. This method of therapy has EU approval and is now in late clinical trials in the US. PBM acts on the cellular level by activation of mitochondrial chain components and supports cell survival. The presentation will present mechanism of action and current clinical results. Eighty five to ninety percent of AMD is dry.
