Abstract :

B and T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphomas comprise approximately 25% of the malignacies diagnosed in children younger than 15 years of age, and their incidence has been slowly increasing in the past 50 years. Various risk factors have been considered, that include pre- and postnatal exposure to radiation, chemotherapy and also multiple genetic conditions (i.e. Down syndrome, Fanconi anemia, ataxia teleangiectasia) etc. With the current treatment regimens the overall outcome has been however greatly improving with more than 80% of the patients surving to adulthood. The presentation will review the key morphological and immunophenotypic diagnostic features for acute T and B-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphomas occuring in childhood. A special focus will be directed toward the main cytogenetic and molecular diagnostic data with impact on prognosis and also to the newest aspects of the classification of the B and T cell lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphomas based on the WHO 2016 revised classification criteria. The lecture will also briefly address the newly added provisional diagnostic entities: Early T precursor (ETP) ALL, B-ALL with intrachromosomal amplification of chromosome 21 (iAMP21), B-ALL with translocations involving tyrosine kinases or cytokine receptors (â�?�?BCR-ABL1-like ALLâ�?).

Biography :

Diana O Treaba obtained her MD from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Targu-Miures, Romania in 1993, and completed her residency in Anatomic Pathology in Romania in 1998. She also completed a residency in Anatomic Patology and Clinical Pathology in USA at Rush Presbyterain St. Luke’s Medical Center in 2003, a fellowship in hematopathology at Northwestern University, Chicago in 2004 and a Fellowship in immunohistochemistry at PhenoPath laboratories in Seattle in 2005, being board certified in AP and CP and Hematology. She is the Director of Hematopathology at Rhode Island and Miriam Hospitals in Providence, RI and is an Associate Professor of Pathology at The Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, RI. She has published more than 30 papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an Editorial Board Member of several pathology journals.
