Retinal diseases remain one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss worldwide, particularly among aging populations. This presentation reviews recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, retinal vein occlusion, and age-related macular degeneration. Innovations in anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapies, long-acting drug delivery systems, gene therapies, and retinal imaging have significantly improved visual outcomes while reducing treatment burden. The session will discuss the role of multimodal retinal imaging, individualized treatment protocols, and artificial intelligence in optimizing patient care. Advances in precision medicine and biomarker- guided therapy are enabling clinicians to identify patients who are most likely to benefit from specific interventions. Future perspectives include regenerative retinal therapies, stem cell-based approaches, and next-generation pharmacological treatments that aim to preserve vision and improve quality of life.
Sobha Sivaprasad is Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at King's College London, United Kingdom, and Consultant Ophthalmologist at King's College Hospital. She is internationally recognized for her research in retinal diseases, diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal imaging. Her work has contributed significantly to improving evidence- based management of retinal disorders.
