Dermatitis herpitiformis in a female with ulcerative colitis, case report and review of the literature

Abstract :

Although rare, skin disorders are known to complicate ulcerative colitis. We report a middle age Sudanese lady with ulcerative colitis and bullous itchy skin rash affecting almost all her body. Successful diagnosis of dermatitis herpitiformis was made after clinical, immunological and histopathological studies, and the patient has improved after a combination of topical and systemic treatments. This is the ninth reported case with this rather rare association. We conclude that dermatitis herpitiformis should be suspected in a patient with bullous skin lesions and ulcerative colitis. Various aspects of skin complications of inflammatory bowel diseases are reviewed .
