Abstract :

Background & Aim: Cataract is a disease of the lens that causes vision clouding and eventually blindness. Patient satisfaction following cataract surgery is a crucial element and outcome of the procedure. The aim was to assess satisfaction level and to identify pre, intra and post-op factors that can increase or decrease satisfaction level. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study including 193 patients having cataract surgery in KAMC in Riyadh. Data were collected, after getting approval, by reviewing medical records and interviewing patients post-operatively using a validated questionnaire. P-value less than 0.05 was used to indicate statistical significance. Results: The majority of the patients (90%) were satisfied with the surgery. The results showed that side of surgery, surgeon?s communication with the patient prior to the operation, having subjective report of better vision and having the patient?s expectations met have a positive influence on satisfaction. On the other hand, having complications or pain post-operatively negatively affects satisfaction. Conclusion: Improving communication with patients and setting realistic goals can increase the satisfaction level. Pain management and precautions to decrease the rate of complications can also have a positive influence on the satisfaction. No association was found between satisfaction and different demographics of the patients.
