A case of medication resistant acanthamoeba keratitis treated with CXL in Turkey

Abstract :

Purpose: To report a patient with medication resistant Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) treated succesfully with corneal crosslinking (CXL) procedure. Methods: A 26 years old male patient with medication resistant AK treated with UV-A therapy. A standard CXL procedure with administration of an anesthetic, followed by debridement of central corneal epithelium ended with aplication of riboflavin 0.1% and UV-A irradiation. Results: Dramatically patient experienced improvement in symptoms in 24 hours. After 2 months keratitis was left with a semitransparent paracentral scar that did not affect visual acuity. Conclusions: Our experience and current literature suggest that CXL could be a promising new option for selected cases of medication-resistant AK with corneal melting to avoid emergency keratoplasty and for the rapid relief of patients subjective symptoms.
