Biography

Dr. Sean J. Barnett has received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1993, his Master of Science in Anatomy degree from Wright State University in 1996, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Wright State University School of Medicine in 2000. He completely his General Surgical training at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 2007. During his tenure at the University of Minnesota he complete two years of basic science laboratory work with Daniel A. Saltzman, MD, PhD, a fellowship in surgical infectious disease under David L. Dunn, MD, PhD, served as administrative chief resident in 2006-2007, and won numerous awards for his research and teaching. Dr. Barnett then completed a fellowship in Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in 2009.  He is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He serves on numerous equipment and standards boards for the hospital and is one of three adolescent bariatric surgeons on staff.  He is also a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association’s New Technology Committee. He has published more than 14 peer reviewed journal articles, 4 book chapters, 4 anatomical teaching computer programs, as well as presenting at over 30 national and international meetings. He is currently a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP), the International Pediatric Endoscopy Group (IPEG) and the Owen H. Wangensteen Surgical Society. He is an honored member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.

Research Interest

Long-term longitudinal assessment of adolescents undergoing bariatric surgery. Neonatal minimally invasive surgery. Medical device design (especially specific to the pediatric population). Innovative outpatient surgery delivery models.
