Biography
 Neela K. Patel, MD, MPH is Associate Professor with Tenure, Family and Community Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Patel completed Geriatrics Fellowship that prepared her to care for and study older adults medical and psychosocial needs. As Medical Director of the UT Medicine Senior Health Clinic, she with her team are setting an example for other primary care clinics to establish as patient centered medical home. Dr. Patel was accepted as a participant of the first Presidential Faculty Learning Community for Interprofessional Education (IPE) and contributed to the recommendations for IPE for UTHSCSA. She has developed clinical curricula for training medical students, residents and fellows as models of Interprofessional Education and Clinical Practice. (IPECP) Dr. Patels research interests are on physical activity in older adults with an emphasis on the impact of yoga as an exercise intervention on their functional status and quality of life. Dr. Patel is active in the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and its International Special Interest Group (SIG) where she served as the Chair of the SIG for five years now works closely with AGSs Ambassador for India to improve Geriatric Care in India. She is active in the local San Antonio Community and is the past President of the Texas Indo American Physicians Society for 2012. Dr. Patel was instrumental in establishing the Junior Volunteer Program - TIPSJVP, in 2012, to encourage children of Indian Origin to work with professionals of various backgrounds for altruistic work. She also serves as mentor for the Center for Medical Ethics and Humanities and coordinates the International Students Elective for students who go to India for a global experience. She was nominated to the Board of Directors Texas Geriatrics Society. Dr. Patel has been instrumental in expanding the Division to be that of Community Geriatrics & Palliative Care with consultation services both in the hospital and also for ambulatory care.
