Biography
Leonardo Freire-de-Lima is Assistant Professor at the Carlos Chagas Filho Biophysics Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was graduated in Biology in 2002, and received PhD degree in 2008 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In his doctoral research project, Leonardo focused on parasite-host cell interactions mediated by carbohydrates during Trypanosoma cruzi infection. In 2008, Leonardo defended his doctoral thesis entitled “The molecular contribution of the Trypanosoma cruzi trans-sialidase in the virulence mechanisms of experimental Chagas disease". From 2008 to 2010 Leonardo was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Washington, Seattle. The post-doctoral project was related to the cellular biology and glycobiology of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process. Leonardo has published articles on cell biology of protozoa, structure and function of glycomolecules and post-translational modifications in cancer cells. Leonardo is mainly involved in projects related to the glycosylation changes in cancer cells and immunoglycobiology  of infectious diseases.
