Biography
 Dr. Deshpande started his career in medicine as a medical anthropologist, graduating from Stanford University in 1999 with a BA in Human Biology and a Master's degree in Evolutionary Anthropology. After a year teaching Medical English at Ehime University School of Medicine in Ehime, Japan, he earned an MD from Penn State College of Medicine in 2004, and completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California - San Diego in 2007. He moved to the University of Hawaii where he worked as a Chief Resident and then an Assistant Professor of Medicine, and where he continues to be a faculty Hospitalist. While at UH, Dr. Deshpande was involved with curriculum building, bedside and clinical skills teaching, and residency selection; he completed the Certificate program in Medical Education in 2010. Dr. Deshpande is now the staff Internal Medicine physician for the American Embassy in Tokyo and a Senior Researcher and clinical educator at St. Luke's International Hospital Life Science Institute. His research interests include the implementation of hospitalist medicine and general medicine health systems in Japan, clinical reasoning and diagnostic decision-making, and undergraduate/garaduate medical education reform. He also has interests in disease variability by ethnicity, population-level primary health screening, and medical writing.
