Biography

I'm a full-time researcher in the field of aquatic ecology with a PhD obtained in 2008 at the University of Plymouth (U.K.). In the first steps of my research career stage I focused on researching marine intertidal ecology, a field where I’m still active but more recently I merged this research with a new research area on groundwater ecology. Hence, nowadays I aim to: a) examine the ecological and economic importance of groundwater coastal discharge in marine ecosystems, b) develop the still missing Portuguese stygofauna - groundwater fauna - database and, c) the role of stygofauna as bioindicators of the aquifer ecosystem condition. I've published several 1 author research papers in groundwater and intertidal ecology, including in the highest impact factor journals such as Marine Ecology and Progress Series. I also currently teach at Instituto Superior Técnico postgraduate courses on scientific writing and communication and experimental design.
