Abstract :

Pharmacist driven ASP (antimicrobial stewardship program) in AHS (Ambulatory Healthcare Services) clinics is sought to optimize antimicrobial prescribing in order to improve individual patient care as well as reduce hospital costs and slow down the spread of antimicrobial resistance. In UAE, resistance to antibiotics has reached a very concerning high level compared to other countries according to the Abu Dhabi Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance Report 2011 (AD ARS 2011) by the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi (HAAD). With our limited resources the best strategy to implement ASP is implement a pharmacist - driven prospective audit and feedback model. It�??s a real-time review of antibiotic use after antimicrobial therapy has been initiated and recommendations are made with regard to their appropriateness in terms of several defined measurements such as compliance with the local and IDSA guidelines, the quantities of prescribed antimicrobials using DDDs (Defined Daily Doses) tool per 100 visits, the quality of prescribed antimicrobials by audit using PPS tool (point-prevalence surveillance). And measure the impact on the patient clinical outcomes by measuring percentage of patient�??s revisits after each ASP clinical intervention.
