Background: The lower eyelid aging causes various changes to the periorbital fat, skin, and muscle. Objective: Therefore, it is necessary to customize the treatment approach according to the patient��?s aging finding. Methods: We reviewed the preoperative photographs of 442 patients who underwent transconjunctival laser lower blepharoplasty from July 2002 to December 2016. Observations were made about the lower eyelid aging for the extent and degree of the protrusion of the orbital fat, descent of fat bag, wrinkles at rest, dark circles and periorbital hollow. We scored degree of the aging from 0 to 3. Results: The subjects were 442. Males were 115, 23-73 years old, and 45.9 years in average. Females were 327, 20-70 years, and 39.6 years in average. The score of the medial fat fad protrusion in the male and female was 1.9 and 1.4 and of the central fat pad was 2.3 and 1.9, and of the lateral fat pad was 0.9 and 0.2 in average. The result of wrinkles, dark circles, descent of eye bag, and periorbital hollow in the male and female was 1.8 and 1.3, 1.4 and 1.7, 0.8 and 0.2, and 2.5 and 1.7 in average, respectively. Statistically, there were differences in each finding according to gender (p<0.05). In addition, the age-related aging findings in each gender were evaluated. Within the same gender, there were differences to the each finding according to the age groups (p<0.05). Conclusion & Significance: The result by gender and age of lower eyelid aging means that lower eyelid aging is predictable by gender and age. By knowing these differences, an appropriate treatment plan can be set up for each patient and also based on this, we can explain the other situations that may occur in the future to the patients.
Sungin Cho has been active since 1995 as a Dermatologist. Since 1993, he has been a Lecturer or participant at various national and international conferences. He is currently a Member of the Korean and American Academy of Dermatology and is a Member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. He has specialized and showed excellent results in transcutaneous lower eyelid laser blepharoplasty, ablative or non-ablative laser skin resurfacing, and nonsurgical hair loss treatment and hair transplantation. He has been a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Chung-Ang University Medical School until recently. He is currently practicing group practice in Seoul, Korea.
