Abstract :

Castlemans disease was fi rst described by Dr. Benjamin Castleman in 1956. It is a benign and rare lymphoproliferative disorder. Th e two main forms are unicentric and multicentric Castlemans disease. In HIV positive patients, available evidence points to HHV8 as the cause of multicentric Castlemans disease. Th e synergism of HIV and HHV8 causes a number of common HIV associated diseases which may pose diagnostic challenges. In addition, HIV associated multicentric Castlemans disease poses management challenges. Th is presentation discusses some of these challenges, specifi cally as relevant to Sub-Saharan Africa, in the light of current research questions about HIV and HHV8.
