Small farms and biogas production in Brazil

Abstract :

The use of biomass residues by Brazilian small farms might contribute to rural development through mitigating environmental impacts and adding value to agribusiness chains. Different kinds of biomass, such as animal manure and agricultural waste, can be used as raw material to produce organic fertilizer and biogas in digesters. While organic fertilizers improve the chemical, physical and biological properties of the soil, biogas can be used to produce heat and energy in rural establishments. This research aims to present the main approaches of relevant studies developed between 2012 and 2017 on the biogas production by the Brazilian small farms, using a systematic literature review. According to the results, although there is a governmental agenda involving the central theme of this work, more policies and incentives are necessary. In addition, the results indicate that alternative forms of business organization, such as cooperatives and condominiums, can favor the implementation of biogas production projects by Brazilian small farms.

Bruno Henrique Crespo Porto stays studying Master of Science at the Brasília University. He has been serving as an Agronomist of the General Coordination of Agroecology and Renewable Energies of the Brazilian Federal Government. He has planning policies for small farms.
