Abstract :

Menopause and andropause introduce changes in the body, psyche and social relations that also affect sexuality. We report a 53 year old married woman who was referred for complaints of hot flushes. When asked, she also mentioned dyspareunia and loss of sexual interest. She had a family history of cardiovascular disease. Her 25 year old son had an addiction problem. Three months after starting oral Menopause Hormone Treatment (MHT) the vasomotor complaints had disappeared, but persisting sexual pain and loss of interest necessitated referral for further counseling. This case illustrates how a multidisciplinary approach can aid in diagnosis and therapy of menopausal complaints, using biopsychosocial treatment principles, resulting in a structured holistic care model. In our view, menopause care is best achieved through an integrative and holistic approach to consultation, which is based on evidence-based treatment.
