Abstract :

Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects 10-20% of the population and has higher rates of relapse, while having functional impairment and significant morbidity. Cognitive dysfunction in MDD is one mode that brings about morbidity. This cognitive impairment tends to persist beyond the acute depression into remission, thus contributing to long-term deficits. There are several cognitive assessment instruments, but some have not been tested in depression, while some do not have any subjective assessment tools, some require extensive training while some require long durations to complete. THINC-it application was formulated as a brief, sensitive and validated tool to assess cognitive impairment in depression. The tool has a subjective component, the PDQ5 or the Perceived Deficits Questionnaire, and four objective tests; The Spotter, or choice reaction time, The Symbol Check or n-back test, The Code Breaker, or digital symbol substitution test and The Trail, or the trail making test-B. Discussion: With the calculated cutoff values we can speculate the levels at which cognitive deficits would be observed in each of the tests. The ages of participants appeared to be statistically with regards to subjective deficits, attention, and executive functions. There does not seem to be a statistically significant difference when it comes to gender. Conclusion: The cut off levels/analyzed data of the THINC-it app for the Sri Lankan population can be used for further research, following translation of the app to Sinhala/Tamil/ or for newly generated applications.
