Abstract :

In this diverse panel, we will be discussing research findings from the numerous studies conducted at the Global Mental Health Lab at Teachers College, Columbia University that highlight generating positive attitudes towards mental health, redefining and reframing pathology and the resilience and the ability of people to thrive in adverse situations. Moving from the sick role to the recovery role in interpersonal therapy, the â??sick roleâ? is a critical element of the medical model that Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is based on. In our IPT trainings globally, we discovered that we can reframe the â??sick roleâ? within a more positive light that many communities around the world find helpful. This presentation will focus on examples on the reframing of the â??sick roleâ? from IPT trainings in Haiti, Lebanon and Uganda.
