Abstract :

This paper will see midwifery through the eyes of Asasiya Muhammad, also known as “The People’s Midwife.” The journey of her unique education and training is embedded with hurdles. From defining what different licenses a midwife can receive and how the concept of midwifery has evolved (i.e., granny midwives), to how that change impacts the occupation, these elements underpin the value system that shapes the career of a midwife in the model of a case-study. The overall purpose of my paper is to explore how Asasiya Muhammad’s journey to become a Certified Professional Midwife and her experiences in the profession, can help the readers explore the internal complications in the field that arise. Her credentials, training, and perspective on being a midwife, brings out many topics of discussion that led me to search for the reasons behind the invisibility of midwives. Limitations and strengths of having one case study as a basis of this paper is further discussed in the paper as well.
