Abstract :

Forth in the onshore installed capacity of wind power 24 GW, India certainly is cautious in offshore wind power plants off the coast of India. With 302 GW estimated onshore wind potential at 100 m level and competing solar project costs offshore wind power take-off in India needs some more time. A study by Scottish Development International (SDI) in 2011 showed good offshore wind potential 1 GW north of Gulf of Manar and 1 GW south of southern tip of India. EU, DFID/British Council, have been actively assisting the Indian Governement to trigger the first offshore project in India. NIWE has been measuring offshore wind (fetch) in the tip of Dhanuskoti. Off Gujarat coast, a L iDAR measurement is being planned under FOWIND project of EU/GWEC supported by NIWE. While most developed nations taken over a decade to commission the first offshore, with such expertise being available to India, India will shorten the lead time of the first project with the policy notified by Governement of India.
