Abstract :

Understanding how to interpret misleading food labels is an essential life skill. What is missing from food labels is equally important. GMOs are one of the most controversial, confusing and topical issues for consumers today. As healthcare providers of any type, we need to be able to answer questions about GMOs for ourselves as well as our clients. Drawing from her book â??Cut the Crap! The A-Z Guide to Food Labelsâ?, I will highlight key myths and facts surrounding GMOs. You will walk away with an understanding of why GM technology is often compared to Russian Roulette, how GMOs surreptitiously made their way into our foods via a regulatory loop-hole, what industry tactics are used to mislead us about their safety and what the major health and environmental implications are.
