Abstract :

The areal parts (leaves and flowers) of spearmint were collected from Azrou region (Moroccan Middle-Atlas). The essential oil (EO) and hydrosol (HYD) of this plant, obtained by hydro-distillation method then analyzed by CG-MS and CGFID, were evaluated for its potential against six bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli BLSE, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas putida and Proteus mirabilis. The inhibitory effects of the EO and HYD spearmint were tested by using agar disc diffusion and dilution broth methods. The results of chromatographic analyses have shown diverse chemical profiles. The EO was dominated by carvone (71.56%), limonene (10.50%), Trans-4-caranone (2.75%) and isodihydrocarveol acetate (2.07%) while the HYD was dominated by 1, 8- cineol (22.85%), camphor (13.53%) and α-pinene (5.88%), α-fenchene (2.59%) and β-pinene (2.25%). These monoterpenes are considered as interesting molecules that are needed in industrial and pharmaceutical goals. The qualitative evaluation of the antimicrobial activity showed an antimicrobial effect for the oil tested. These results were confirmed by the quantification evaluation which also revealed a significant antibacterial activity of these natural compounds. As for hydrosol, rarely evaluated for its antibacterial power, has also shown its inhibitory efficiency against some strains. So, the promoting results indicate that the spearmint extracts could be exploited as natural antibiotic for the treatment of several infectious diseases and could justify its uses in traditional cures.
