Abstract :

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine based anomaly among women of reproductive age, accounting for between 5-10% prevalence worldwide and about 18% in Nigeria. It is one of the most common factors that impacts on ovulation, therefore, a major contributor to infertility among women of reproductive age. The objective of this study was to determine the degree of awareness about PCOS among women of reproductive age residing in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. A simple random sampling technique was used in the study. Direct answer questionnaire was administered to 800 women within the age of 15-45 years residing in the study area and data analyzed. All participants had a high school education while only 37% of responded had tertiary education. 6% of respondents have a form of knowledge about PCOS and 94% have never heard about the condition. All respondents had basic knowledge of uterine leiomyoma which is a more known cause of fertility issues. PCOS is a common condition that impacts on fertility among women, yet only 6% of the studied population had a form of knowledge about the syndrome. This calls for a very drastic measure in creating awareness about the condition in the study population.
