Abstract :

Endodontic treatment exposes the tooth to a higher incidence of fractures than structurally normal teeth. This is attributed to the loss of anatomical structural integrity of the tooth which has led to the current recommendations of routine restorative therapy post root canal treatments. The most common restorative procedure done nowadays is the posts and crown system, which is considered to be the gold standard of care. However recent studies suggest that we need a new approach for restorative treatment in light of the newer available technologies and the fact that metal posts have been proven to weaken the tooth structure rather than strengthening it. Biomimetic restorations mimicking the natural tooth structure is thought to have better outcome than the current techniques. These biomimetic restorations act as one unit with the tooth structure, so that normal occlusion is less likely to induce negative forces on the tooth– restoration bond.
