Abstract :

Pregnancy and childbirth can bring with it a long list of physical issues that most women and health professionals assume are normal and will resolve automatically after delivery. Studies have shown that these issues, such as incontinence, pelvic pain, diastasis recti and back pain, should be addressed as soon as possible. Many women may develop these problems right after childbirth or several years later. Most women are offered top-notch care during pregnancy and childbirth, but the majority of health care professionals often neglect to address the needs of women after giving birth. Often the physical strains placed on the body as a result of childbirth can lead to lifelong problems that could have been prevented with proper postpartum care. The Baby Bod program was developed by a leading women?s health physical therapist, Marianne Ryan, as a way to help women recover fully from childbirth. Baby Bod is the first program to bridge the gap between medical science and fitness advice for postpartum women. The program includes preventative education, and 2 phases of exercises. The preliminary phase focuses on restoring alignment and breathing capacity to activate and retrain core and pelvic floor muscles, which is gentle enough to be started the day after delivery. The advanced phase includes strengthening exercises for a complete, yet safe full body transformation. In the lecture, the attendees will learn about the lingering musculoskeletal effects of pregnancy and childbirth on postpartum women. There will be a discussion of how physical therapy treatment and a proper self-care program can help women restore their bodies and prevent physical issues.
