Abstract :

Aseries of 56 patients who had limb salvage surgery for bone tumours were retrospectively analysed for survival and quality of life following allograft reconstruction. The Study period was from 14 th of July 2000 to the 20 th of January 2010. Fifty six patients with a mean age of 15 years had compartment resection for suitable primary bone tumours in The National Hospital of Sri Lanka in the senior author?s unit. The five year survival following compartment resection and allograft limb reconstruction was 96%. Six patients were lost to long term follow up due to demise. An additional operation was needed in 42 patients including lengthening procedures to account for growth and 03 patients needed amputation or disarticulation. In the study, children of 19 years and younger reported a good quality of life according to the Musculo-skeletal Tumour Society Quality of life scoring system. It is concluded that limb salvage surgery with allograft reconstruction is an effective treatment modality in primary bone tumours with good quality of life for the patients.
