A species of aquatic animal known as an ornamental fish is raised or marketed for its beauty and unique features rather than for human sustenance or amusement. Koi, goldfish, and tropical fish are examples of decorative fish. It's been done in captivity for a long time. Bowls and tiny tanks that are visible from above were only two examples of the various containers the Chinese utilized for this purpose. The Romans used vivariums to advertise fresh fish in restaurants and kept the fish alive for consumption or sale. The vivarium was then changed into an aquarium after that. In the 19th century, London and Paris saw the establishment of the first aquariums. Instead of being bred or sold for human consumption or entertainment, an aquatic species known as an ornamental fish is valued for its beauty and distinctive characteristics. Examples of ornamental fish include koi, goldfish, and tropical fish. It has long been practiced in confinement. Only two of the many containers the Chinese used for this purpose were bowls and the little tanks visible from above. The Romans kept fish alive in vivarium’s to promote fresh fish at dining establishments and for sale. After that, the vivarium was transformed into an aquarium. The earliest aquariums were built in London and Paris in the 19th century. Contrary to big bodies of water, aquariums provide a very unstable environment for the species they hold. It is impacted by extremely changeable circumstances that vary quickly in the water it is contained in. It is perhaps more crucial to take great care while maintaining fish in these regions. The fish's natural habitat should be replicated as nearly as possible in the aquarium. As a result, it's crucial to include some natural elements to the aquarium. To control pH, oxygen, temperature, and water quality, you need a gadget. The essential elements of an aquarium are ornamental fish and water plants. According to some, aquariums have lovely colors, shapes, or both. These fish lead quick, quiet, and simple lives. All varieties of goldfish are among the common aquarium fish that are ideal for Haryana. Angle fish, Fighter fish, Guppy, Platy, Molly, Tangerine, Barbas, and Sword tail, among others. Fish selection criteria include: A fish should not grow larger than 3 inches, the water should be of high quality, and the fish species must have both omnivorous and appealing characteristics.

An interesting and vibrant method of growing fish with a variety of traits in a small body of water is ornamental fish farming. Growers are mostly farmers and enthusiasts. The term "living jewels" also applies to ornamental fish. Fish species number around 30,000 and are known from all over the world. There are about 800 ornamental fish here. Freshwater aquarium fish often thrive there. They are members of the Callichthyidae, Characidae, Cichlidae, Cobitidae, Cyprinodontidae, Cyprinidae, and Poeciliidae, which are eight closely related families. The two primary categories of ornamental fish are egg layers and live bearers. Being oviparous, the majority of aquarium species often undergo external fertilisation. On the basis of this, it is once more divided into the following categories. Reticulated loach, zebra fish, honey gourami, and gold fish black shark are examples of indigenous species that are significant economically. Due to the existence of a rich biodiversity, suitable climatic conditions, and the accessibility of inexpensive labour, India has a significant potential for the production of ornamental fish. India's top three states for ornamental fish farming are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. Native and foreign species are separated in the category of ornamental plants.

The growth of the domestic aquarium fish business has been greatly aided by the availability of several native species. States in the northeast, West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu are fortunate to have potential native species. 90% of native species are harvested and raised for export (85% are from northeast India). About 100 native species are being raised as aquarium fish at the moment. Due to their unique colors, shapes, and appearances, exotic species are likewise in high demand.
